Six Predictions for 2018 Data Security – Prediction #3

Category: Data Security

In our continued discussion of trends around data security for 2018, we continue to see that shadow IT resources are still causing organizations problems.

Prediction 3:  Shadow IT resources will continue to increase the risk of security breaches for organizations in 2018

According to Gartner, by 2020, a third of successful attacks experienced by enterprises will be via their shadow IT resources. The fact remains that business units will invest in any tool that helps them do their job including file-sharing services and collaboration apps such as What’s App.

Companies who shift from a detect and punish strategy to a culture of acceptance and protection will be able to better reduce the risk of breaches from the natural course of shadow IT resource usage. Organizations who incorporate the ability to persistently protect data will be able to move beyond trying to control shadow IT resources to embracing productivity enhancing systems without risking corporate value.
