An innovative chemical manufacturing company needed to secure its intellectual property (IP) documents during the patent process. If internal or external collaborators leaked the IP before the patent process was completed, the chemical manufacturer could lose millions in revenue and
significant market share. The company used Seclore’s rule-based automatic data protection to secure sensitive emails and documents. Today, the company can securely collaborate with internal
and external partners to create and file their patent documents.
The Challenge
Securely sharing valuable patent information
As a leader in the efficient production of high-quality industrial chemical products, our client regularly designs innovative proprietary solutions that solve challenges in the market.
Our client needs to file patents for these products. As part
of the filing process, multiple teams collaborate to create a
legal Notice of Intent, which involves sharing details of the
product with internal legal counsel and external consultants
across email, network file servers, and cloud platforms.
This collaboration has to remain secure to ensure that intellectual property (IP) isn’t shared with the chemical
company’s competition.
Patenting valuable IP gives the company a competitive edge
in the market—if their IP leaks, especially before patenting,
they risk losing that edge.

The Solution
Auto-protection of patent data for external sharing
Now, the chemical company can securely share IP and patent documents internally and externally.
Seclore’s data-centric security platform provides rule-based automatic data protection for sensitive
emails. It auto-protects IP on user devices by integrating with Microsoft Sensitivity Labels.
When a researcher from the R&D team completes a form with the details of the patent on the Microsoft
Power app, the form submission triggers the automatic creation of a Notice of Intent Word document in
the Seclore-enabled Teams Library. Stakeholders receive an auto-generated, secure, and shareable link,
which they can then use to review and update the document.
The configuration automatically protects sensitive documents residing in Sharepoint Libraries both
on-premise and in the cloud, as well as network-shared folders.
The Results
Securing 500,000+ patent documents
Thanks to Seclore, both internal and external collaboration are secure. The chemical manufacturer has
used Seclore to protect over 500,000 documents, with 500+ monthly active users.
The chemical company has greatly reduced the risk of valuable patent documents leaking outside the
company, protecting the company’s market share and revenue.
