Prediction #5: EDRM Will Play a Key Role in Protecting Data-at-Rest

Category: EDRM, Industries

We have seen many instances where EDRM saved an organization from exposing a sensitive information that was emailed to the wrong person; stopped a contractor from stealing sensitive intellectual property; or protected data that was stored on a stolen mobile device.  However…in 2015, we witnessed (through our customer) one of the first occasions where files-at-rest on an internal server were protected from a malware attack because the files were secured with Enterprise Digital Rights Management.  The malware broke through all of the other ‘security hurdles’ that were in place.  It was only when the malware hit the EDRM-protected files that the data breach was averted.

If the files had been compromised by the attack, it would have put highly confidential banking information at risk for a security breach, costing the organization millions of dollars.   In this situation, the financial services organization had just installed EDRM weeks before.  That’s a record breaking ROI!  The big surprise was that they invested in EDRM to protect information they needed to share with external advisors and partners.  Imagine their surprise when the file-centric security stopped a breach within their own perimeter!

Security breaches will happen.  Adding a layer of security around the file itself will protect your sensitive information at rest, in transit, and at work…both internally and outside the organization…on all types of devices and storage methods.    It will protect information as it flows between applications, storage platforms, devices and transportation mechanisms, closing the inherent security gaps.

In 2016, we predict that Enterprise Digital Rights Management will become an essential technology for organizations who want to embrace new technology innovations and operational imperatives such as the cloud, BYOD, EFSS, and operational outsourcing with confidence.

Prediction #1:  The Need for File-Centric Security Is Greater Than Ever Before
Prediction #2: Automation Will Be Deemed Crucial to the Successful Adoption of EDRM
Prediction #3: Open, Pure-Play EDRM Will Thrive
Prediction #4: Ease-of-Use Will Be Deemed Essential to Driving EDRM Adoption
